Metadata Visualization and Discovery for SAP
Safyr® for SAP Metadata Visualization and Discovery – powerful exploration software to access, understand and exploit your metadata.
Safyr® for SAP is a powerful metadata visualization and discovery technology product that your data analysts and data scientists can use to gain insight into and exploit the data architecture in your own customized SAP systems. This is a critical task for accelerating effective delivery of a wide range of information led projects. You utilise it to speed up the source data discovery process for many projects such as data catalog, data governance, data warehouse, data analytics, master data, data integration, data migration and more.
Whether you are looking for a single table in SAP (e.g. KNA1, BSEG, LFA1), with its business names (e.g. General Data in Customer Master, Accounting Document Segment, Supplier Master) and relationships with other tables; or thousands of tables for your enterprise data catalog Safyr for SAP will be of value to you.
SAP presents you with several challenges when you come to try to make sense of its metadata. For example there are thousands of tables and attributes for you to navigate so finding the right ones for your project can be time consuming and difficult. In addition the relationships between the tables are not defined in the database system catalog. They are contained within the dictionary tables. This means you need a specialist tool to help you to make sense of the data model, analyse and find what you need and then use those results in other technologies to accelerate source data discovery.
Safyr is particularly valuable if you have significantly extended the set of standard SAP tables and/or have multiple instances of SAP to manage.
Customers use Safyr to solve the 3 challenges associated with SAP metadata visualization and discovery.
These are:
Discovery: Locating the source of the useful, business ready metadata in your applications. There is very little of any value in the data system catalog. The useful metadata is in a series of data dictionary tables in SAP.
Scoping and curation: Once the metadata has been located, the next challenge is to find the table or tables necessary for your task and save them for use in other tools and systems.
Delivery: The final hurdle is to provision the metadata into other tools and technical formats. These include data catalog and governance solutions such as Collibra, Informatica EDC, Alation, Infogix, ASG and Adaptive as well as data modeling tools such as SAP PowerDesigner, ER/Studio, erwin. Or you might want to use the information in Excel, CSV, XML or JSON formats.
Safyr is particularly useful when you need to:
Safyr works with any ABAP-based SAP system including ECC, CRM, SRM and S/4HANA.
“We took what would have been months of work (and possibly a barrier to progress) and completed the activity within hours and nominal resource investment. We’re pleased to have been able to achieve a high degree of efficiency with this collaborative effort.”
Wellington Holbrook, ATB Chief Transformation Officer discussing the impact of using Safyr to provision their data catalog with SAP metadata
“As a result of our investment in Safyr we are able to take a more agile approach to meeting the demands for new reports and data within acceptable timescales and the business’ trust in the information they provide is growing”.
From Scott Delaney, Hydro Tasmania
“After doing a quick prototype metadata extract from SAP, the response has been very positive! I’m really grieving for the lost years without access to this tool.
It has met and exceeded my lofty expectations.”
From Brian Farish, AMD
Safyr reveals details of all the tables in the SAP database, including any added by the SAP user (normally ‘Z’ tables).
All the information displayed is drawn from the Data Dictionary tables in SAP, in the language the user chooses. It’s easy to search the tables and to see the numbers of relationships to other tables in the SAP system, and the number of Rows in each table.
Each table in SAP can be expanded to show all the Fields, the Primary Key and Foreign Keys and a detailed description of each Field, all based upon the definitions in the SAP Data Dictionary.

Safyr extracts Relationship information to help the user understand how SAP joins tables. Using this information, details of the related tables for a given table can be displayed. In addition, it’s easy to filter out any of the related tables that do not contain data.
Safyr doesn’t just show details of Tables and Relationships in SAP. It also harvests metadata on SAP Components, Development Classes, Programs, Functions and Transactions. These are revealed in a searchable tree structure, making it easy to find, for example, which Tables are referenced or updated by a given Program.
Safyr users can group Tables into Subject Areas and then visualise them as an Entity Relationship diagram, either using Safyr’s built-in ERDiagrammer, or a range of popular data modeling tools including ERwin, ER/Studio and PowerDesigner.
An accurate and relevant SAP data model will often be an important step in understanding SAP data.

Not only does Safyr let you browse and build your own Subject Areas, but we deliver over 100 ‘pre-built’ Subject Areas based upon popular grouping of SAP tables. These give users a fast-start to quickly identifying SAP tables for key business domain areas. These include, Accounts Payable, Billing, Payroll, Sales and Distribution, Shipping, Quality Management and many more.
We can help with your Business Case for Safyr.
We also provide an additional set of Subject Areas that focus on the Personal Data fields in an SAP system. This ‘Starter Pack’ for SAP GDPR, CCPA or PII is provided via Subject Areas that identify Personal Data fields like Gender, Addresses, Social Security details, Biometric data, etc. that will occur in a SAP ECC or S4/HANA system.
The Starter Pack’s SAP Subject Areas can be easily imported into a customer’s own Safyr Repository to short-cut the tedious job of identifying the Personal Data fields that will need to be considered for their GDPR, CCPA or PII project, learn more.
