Silwood Technology Limited strikes reseller agreement with IDERA for Safyr self-service metadata software

Ascot – 30 July, 2018 – Silwood Technology Ltd. which provides self-service metadata discovery software to simplify and speed up the exploitation of data in large, complex enterprise application packages, today announced a global reseller agreement with IDERA, a provider of powerful database productivity tools.

Through this agreement, IDERA will market and resell Safyr® to complement its ER/Studio data modeling and architecture product suite. The combined offering allows customers to bring metadata from SAP, Salesforce, Oracle and Microsoft ERP and CRM systems into ER/Studio more rapidly and effectively than using traditional discovery approaches.

As enterprises invest in data transformation, analytics and governance initiatives, it is increasingly critical that they are able to exploit the information they have in their ERP and CRM packages. One of the hurdles to delivering these programs is the unique nature of the metadata landscapes underpinning these systems. Their large, complex, opaque and customised data models often hamper development unless software driven self-service metadata discovery tools are employed.

Safyr is a unique software product designed to allow data modelers, architects and analysts to access and make use of the metadata in these systems without needing deep technical knowledge. Content from Safyr can be used directly with ER/Studio to accelerate development and delivery of a variety of data and information management projects.

“IDERA is thrilled to offer the Safyr solution directly to our ER/Studio customers who are working with these key CRM and ERP platforms. Having access to this complex package metadata gives data professionals improved visibility into data lineage across the entire data landscape. This extends the powerful capabilities of ER/Studio even further, to serve as the focal point to manage all of their data architecture and governance initiatives,” said Mark Berglund, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales at IDERA.

“Organisations across all industries must identify new ways to innovate to compete and meet regulatory requirements. Data is increasingly recognised as a key asset in meeting these objectives and delivering compliance. Metadata is a key foundational component to this and Safyr’s ability to provision ER/Studio with relevant data models helps to accelerate the delivery of these initiatives,” said Roland Bullivant, Sales and Marketing Director of Silwood Technology. “We already have a number of mutual customers who are leveraging the strengths of Safyr and ER/Studio and are excited to be working more closely with IDERA on promoting the combined value of our solutions.”

As a result of this agreement, IDERA will boost its ability to support customers who have invested in ERP and CRM systems, enabling them to unlock even greater business value from their SAP, Oracle, Salesforce and Microsoft packages.

Silwood Technology and IT solutions specialist Milestone Technologies announce partnership

Ascot, UK and Cape Town, South Africa, 25 June, 2018 – Milestone Technologies (MileTech) has signed a partnership agreement adding Silwood Technology Ltd.’s Safyr® to the roster of Information and Data Management software solutions offered to customers seeking to overcome the challenges associated with greater compliance and regulatory requirements.

The IT solutions specialist will now become one of Silwood Technology’s key  partners in the African region.

Johannesburg and Cape Town based MileTech assists its customers to deliver digital transformation, data governance, integration and reporting programs by combining “best of breed” tools that provide solutions for application requirements gathering, analysis, design and development with specialist consulting skills.

Miletech has developed skills and competencies in utilising Safyr® to discover metadata from their customers’ ERP and CRM solutions for exploitation in these projects.

Silwood Technology has developed Safyr, a self-service metadata discovery software which empowers data analysts and architects to discover and navigate the metadata in large packages without the need for technical specialists, external consultants or resorting to guesswork.  This is especially useful in complex data landscapes which underpin application packages from SAP, Salesforce, Oracle and Microsoft.

The use of Safyr accelerates data preparation and analysis phases in key projects such as Data Governance and Catalogues, Data Warehouse and Analytics, Master Data Management, Data Integration and Transformation. Safyr also provisions a variety of other technology platforms with metadata from these packages.

Safyr assists Milestone consultants in accelerating the delivery of source data analysis for programs which involve large, complex and customised enterprise applications. This often overlooked project phase can contribute to delays and overspend if not completed effectively especially when packaged systems are part of the IT ecosystem involved.

Derek Meiring, Milestone Technologies’ Founder and Managing Director commented: “Safyr software has supported a number of data governance projects we have undertaken, and we are delighted to take the relationship to a new level by becoming a Silwood reseller. Given the current compliance regulations, we find our clients need to strive towards an Enterprise Information Model (EIM) which can provide Data Lineage and Semantic Lineage (Entity and Attribute) across ERP and non-ERP data structures. Safyr plays a highly fundamental role in this ability.”

Roland Bullivant, Silwood Technology’s Sales and Marketing Director said: “We are very pleased to be able to welcome the team at Milestone Technologies to our growing partner network and are looking forward to working with them more closely. They bring a highly creative and real-world approach to solving their customers’ data and application management challenges and we look forward to making a contribution to their success with our unique self-service metadata discovery product.”

Silwood Technology reveals how to find personal data for GDPR compliance in JD Edwards and SAP systems

Metadata discovery software vendor Silwood Technology Ltd has produced two guides revealing how to find personal data using its GDPR Starter Packs for SAP and JD Edwards.

The GDPR Starter Packs are available for major application packages – SAP, Oracle E-Business Suite, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012, JD Edwards and Siebel – enabling users to quickly and simply identify the precise location of Personal Data.

They are underpinned by Safyr®, a dedicated metadata discovery software, which enables users to access, understand, share and utilise the underlying data structures for all major application packages.

Research conducted recently by Silwood Technology Ltd demonstrated the scale of the challenge encountered by users of large ERP and CRM packages when locating personal data for GDPR compliance.

The research revealed that in SAP alone there are over 900,000 fields that may (or may not) contain personal information that require data discovery and risk assessment. The size and complexity of the large ERP and CRM databases mean that businesses that are not well-advanced in data discovery or are undertaking manual discovery processes are probably not fully ready on time for GDPR. For instance, within a typical Siebel system, when searching for personal data, users will be faced with approximately 5,000 tables and 170,000 fields. Similarly, JD Edwards contains 5,000 tables and 140,000 fields.

Nick Porter, founder and technical director at Silwood Technology explained: “While it is vital to perform this ‘discovery’ work for any GDPR project, without a clear understanding of where personal data is located in each of the systems in an enterprise, it will not be a straightforward task to carry out any of the steps to reach GDPR compliance.”

He also confirmed that interest in the Starter Packs is still strong, the day before the compliance deadline, and the reasons are twofold: “Firstly, it is highly unlikely that all organisations will have documented Personal Data in leading packages by the 25 May 2018. Therefore, those that are not fully compliant will need to undertake this work later as part of their data protection programme. As a result, there is an urgency now to find tools to find data quickly and accurately.”

Finding personal data in an ERP system for GDPR compliance

The ‘Data’ in the GDPR is what the guidance calls Personal Data. For example, if a living individual can be identified from any data being processed, it is covered by GDPR. This might be a single piece of information, like a Social Security Number, or several pieces of data that can be combined to identify someone (e.g. Name and Date of Birth).

Exactly what constitutes Personal Data will vary from customer to customer, depending on the industry type. For example, in the healthcare sector, Patient Number would be a means to identify a person, but this would be irrelevant in, say, manufacturing.

Working out which tables store personal data that needs to be reviewed for the GDPR is a challenge in any environment, but particularly so where the system is one or more of the large Application Packages, from the likes of Oracle, SAP, Salesforce and Microsoft.

The two guides describe how to use Safyr® to ‘scope’ the potential tables that store ‘relevant’ personal data in a JD Edwards EnterpriseOne (sometimes also known as OneWorld) and SAP systems. In this case, the Silwood research team was looking for tables which store ‘Birth’ information – Date of Birth, Year of Birth, etc. – all pieces of data that can help to uniquely identify an individual. However, the process would work for any data which comes under the general definition of Personal Data. (Article 4 – Definitions, Section 1 of the Regulations defines the scope of data covered).

Many JD Edwards and SAP systems have been customised so rather than providing a reference model, Safyr is more effective and useful because it extracts metadata from the application as implemented – including customisations.

Indeed, one of the major benefits of Silwood Technology’s Starter Packs is that they will work with the customer’s own system. Users can easily overlay the Safyr Subject Areas on the metadata extracted from customised application packages.

SILWOOD TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHES ORACLE E-BUSINESS SUITE AND MICROSOFT DYNAMICS STARTER PACKS FOR GDPR DATA DISCOVERY

– Starter Packs simplify personal data fields discovery in five leading application packages, ready for the upcoming GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and beyond

– Strong interest in existing packs as organisations still facing major challenge when locating personal data

Ascot, UK, 24 April 2018. Metadata discovery software vendor Silwood Technology Ltd  has expanded its series of GDPR Starter Packs for major application packages, including SAP, JD Edwards and Siebel. Today’s launch of Oracle E-Business Suite and Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Starter Packs will enable more users to quickly and simply identify the precise location of Personal Data.

The GDPR Starter Packs are underpinned by Safyr®, a dedicated metadata discovery software, which enables users to access, understand, share and utilise the underlying data structures for all major application packages.

Silwood Technology is urging application package users and its channel partners to ensure that they have, at minimum, instigated the discovery and documentation of personal data before 25 May 2018.

Nick Porter, founder and technical director at Silwood Technology, has confirmed that interest in the existing Starter Packs is strong and the reasons are twofold: “Firstly, it is highly unlikely that all organisations will have documented Personal Data in leading packages by the 25 May 2018. Therefore, those that are not fully compliant will need to undertake this work later as part of their data protection programme. As a result, there is an urgency now to find tools to find data quickly and accurately.

“Secondly, GDPR compliance is not a one-time event. When maintaining compliance, we believe that Safyr will be of value in keeping data catalogues, inventories and glossaries up-to-date with the locations of Personal Data across major packaged applications”.

Recent research conducted by Silwood Technology illustrated the scale of the challenge when locating personal data for GDPR compliance. For instance, within a typical Oracle E-Business Suite system, when searching for personal data, users will be faced with approximately 22,000 tables and 570,000 fields. Similarly, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 contains 7,000 tables and 100,000 fields.

As an example, consider that the attribute “birth” occurs in over 40 tables in an Oracle E-Business Suite system. With Safyr, users can find all occurrences of the Personal Data string ‘birth’ across all tables and fields in an Oracle E-Business Suite system in under five minutes. The resulting data can be delivered to metadata and data governance platforms for further exploitation.

The new Starter Packs join the SAP Starter Pack launched in November 2017, and JD Edwards and Siebel packs launched in March 2018.

Customers using Silwood’s Safyr application for these application packages can request their Starter Pack free of charge. The Starter Pack comprises a set of Safyr Subject Areas that describe and identify each type of personal information, including social security number, IP address and phone numbers.

One of the major benefits of these Starter Packs is that they will work with the customer’s own system. Users can easily overlay the Safyr Subject Areas on the metadata extracted from customised application packages.

SILWOOD TECHNOLOGY RELEASES JD EDWARDS AND SIEBEL STARTER PACKS FOR GDPR DATA DISCOVERY

– Starter Packs simplify finding personal data fields in JD Edwards ERP and Siebel CRM packages, ready for the upcoming GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)

Ascot, UK, 20 March 2018. Metadata discovery software vendor Silwood Technology Ltd has announced the availability of GDPR Starter Packs for two major application packages – JD Edwards and Siebel – enabling users to quickly and simply identify the precise location of Personal Data.

The GDPR Starter Packs are underpinned by Safyr®, a dedicated metadata discovery software, which enables users to access, understand, share and utilise the underlying data structures for all major application packages, including JD Edwards and Siebel.

Research conducted recently by Silwood Technology demonstrated the scale of the challenge encountered by users when locating personal data for GDPR compliance. For instance, within a typical Siebel system, when searching for personal data, users will be faced with approximately 5,000 tables and 170,000 fields. Similarly, JD Edwards contains 5,000 tables and 140,000 fields.

Nick Porter, founder and technical director at Silwood Technology, commented: “While we are less than 70 days from the GDPR deadline, we believe that there are many enterprises still at planning stage. Unfortunately, the location of personal information in a large application package is regarded as a significant and tedious task.  And it’s not a one-time job – companies will need to revisit the discovery task whenever the data structure of a package like JD Edwards or Siebel changes. That’s not an unusual occurrence – the manufacturers of these packages often introduce new tables and columns with new releases, and customers often customize their own systems to add fields needed to support features that are specific to their business.

“Any GDPR data discovery project, we recommend automating the identification of personal data. This is where Safyr can make a real difference. Companies using our Starter Packs can quickly map where GDPR data is likely to be stored. This saves hours of searching through data structures.”

As an example, consider that the attribute “birth” occurs in over 210 tables in a JD Edwards system. With Safyr, users can find all occurrences of the Personal Data string ‘birth’ across all tables and fields in a JD Edwards system in under five minutes. The resulting data can be delivered to metadata and data governance platforms for further exploitation.

The new Starter Packs are the second and third in a series, as an SAP Starter Pack was launched in November 2017.

Customers who use Silwood’s Safyr application for JD Edwards and Siebel can receive their Starter Pack free of charge. The Starter Pack comprises a set of Safyr Subject Areas that describe and identify each type of personal information, such as zip codes, dates of birth, license plates.

One of the major benefits of these Starter Packs is that they will work with the customer’s own system. Users can easily overlay the Safyr Subject Areas on the metadata extracted from customised JD Edwards or Siebel systems.

SILWOOD TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHES ADVANCED SAP DATA DISCOVERY CAPABILITIES

Ascot, UK, 6 March 2018. Silwood Technology Ltd, a supplier of enterprise application metadata intelligence software, has announced that Safyr® now provides users of SAP and SAP Business Warehouse (BW) greater visibility and intelligence about the data connections between the two products. The company has also enhanced product features for GDPR data discovery.

For data professionals, Safyr’s new capability to show the BW Extractor functions solves the long-standing challenge of tracing the origin of data represented in SAP BW. This is especially important as trust in the data provided by any BI environment is based on the reliability of the data’s provenance.

Safyr is the only dedicated metadata discovery software product for SAP and enables users to access, understand, share and utilise the underlying data structures of SAP applications. Customers can now use a new SAP Hierarchy within Safyr to find the tables in SAP ERP that are accessed by the SAP BW Extractor programs.

Nick Porter, Technical Director of Silwood Technology comments, “customers and prospects have been asking for this BW Extractor capability for a while, as it provides new insights into how data flows through the SAP landscape.

“We’ve also enhanced some of the features we introduced in Safyr last year to further ease the GDPR Personal Data discovery process. While the headline feature of this release is the new BW Extractor capability, every existing user will benefit from upgrading”.

In terms of GDPR, Safyr offers features such as marked field which enables users to easily isolate all instances of a particular term (e.g. “birth) across an entire system; and metadata reporting which enables faster and more effective collation and management of Personal Data. Silwood Technology also recently tested 5 major ERP and CRM packages for GDPR personal data.

Siebel and Salesforce users will also benefit from the new Safyr software, as Silwood Technology has released upgrades to ensure compatibility with the latest versions of these CRM packages.

SILWOOD TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHES NEW SAP STARTER PACK FOR GDPR COMPLIANCE

Starter Pack takes the hard work out of finding personal data fields in an SAP ERP system for the upcoming GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)

Ascot, UK, 1 November 2017. Silwood Technology Ltd, a supplier of enterprise application metadata intelligence software, has announced the availability of its GDPR Starter Pack for SAP, giving users of this widely implemented ERP a valuable kick-start in identifying the precise location of Personal Data fields in any SAP system.

The GDPR Starter Pack is underpinned by Safyr, a dedicated metadata discovery software product, which enables users to access, understand, share and utilise the underlying data structures for SAP applications.

Research conducted by the UK & Ireland SAP User Group shows 86% of SAP users do not fully understand how GDPR will affect their SAP landscapes and how to reach compliance.

A critical starting point for any GDPR strategy is the location of personal information. Where some or all of that data lies in a large application package like SAP, this becomes a significant and tedious task.

As an example, consider how many times the attribute “birth” might occur in an SAP system which contains over 90,000 tables. Using Safyr in a recent client engagement, a customer was able to find all occurrences of the Personal Data string ‘birth’ across all tables and fields in an SAP system in under five minutes. That information could then be delivered to metadata and data governance platforms for further exploitation.

To simplify the ‘discovery’ process, Silwood Technology is announcing the first in a series of ‘Starter Packs’ for ERP/CRM packages that take the hard work out of identifying these fields.

The first starter pack is for SAP, the largest system in terms of the sheer volume of metadata that defines the package data. The scope and range of potential personal information in SAP is very broad. Silwood has made the process of finding these ‘Personal Data’ fields significantly easier by developing processes to seek them out, record them and make them available in a useful form.

Customers who use Silwood’s Safyr application for SAP can receive the Starter Pack free of charge. The Starter Pack comprises a set of Safyr Subject Areas that describe and identify each type of personal information, such as zip codes, dates of birth, license plates.

A Safyr Subject Area is a grouping of tables and fields that a customer can overlay on the metadata extracted from their own customised SAP system so they can easily see which tables and fields are important to GDPR.

What constitutes personal data will vary by industry – the Safyr user can combine these Subject Areas into other groups that form the consolidated set of fields for their company and requirements. And they can add in their own fields too – especially where their SAP system has been customised.

One of the major benefits of these starter packs is that they will work with the customer’s own system. Silwood will be releasing similar starter packs for the other packages in the near future.

SAFYR ACCELERATES PERSONAL DATA DISCOVERY IN ERP & CRM SYSTEMS FOR GDPR COMPLIANCE

– Fast, accurate and cost-effective software for locating Personal Data in SAP, Salesforce, Oracle, Microsoft and other major packaged applications.

– Providing accessible metadata intelligence for the most complex, customised ERP and CRM packages.

Ascot, UK, 10 October 2017. Silwood Technology Ltd, a supplier of enterprise application metadata intelligence software, has announced the availability of Safyr® Version 7, a software product that enables users to identify sources of Personal Data in major ERP and CRM packages for GDPR compliance in minutes.

Analysts, architects and other data professionals can now use Safyr to access, understand, share and utilise the underlying data structures for major packages from SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Microsoft and other packages.

Finding the precise location of data defined as ‘Personal’ under GDPR from amongst the thousands of tables and columns (or fields) in customised systems, represents a significant challenge. Traditional tools and methods, such as searching for documentation, using templates and reference models or employing external consultants, do not address the challenge in an effective and timely fashion.

As an example, consider how many times the Personal Data attribute “birth” might occur in an SAP system which contains over 90,000 tables. Using Safyr in a recent client engagement, a customer was able to find all occurrences of the Personal Data string ‘birth’ across all tables and fields in an SAP system in under five minutes. That information could then be delivered to metadata and data governance platforms for further exploitation, for example for data lineage, metadata glossary or enterprise data dictionary applications.

Safyr now offers two new features in response to the need to identify all Personal Data held on an individual for GDPR compliance programs.

Marked Field – this feature addresses the problem of having large numbers of unwanted or irrelevant attributes in some tables. It enables users to easily isolate all instances of a particular term (e.g. “birth) across an entire system, and decide exactly which items of the metadata set are relevant and need to be retained.

The feature also enables the combination of several sets of Personal Data attributes into a single manageable grouping.

Metadata Reporting – has been introduced to support organisations that may not yet have embarked on the implementation of a Data Governance or Enterprise Metadata Management platform for GDPR. It provides them with the ability to export Safyr content directly to Excel to enable faster and more effective collation and management of Personal Data.

Commenting on Safyr 7, Founder and Technical Director of Silwood Technology, Nick Porter said, “We recognised the unique challenge associated with documenting where Personal Data fields or attributes exist in large complex packages, and have enhanced Safyr to make that process faster and easier. Safyr 7 will make a major contribution to our customers and partners GDPR compliance efforts.”

Rob Perry, Vice President of Product Marketing at ASG Technologies, a Silwood Technology partner, commented on how Safyr is a key tool in data discovery for the GDPR and complements data intelligence tools: “Complying with the GDPR requires that organizations  know what Personal Data is managed, where it came from and how it has been used.

“Silwood Technology’s Safyr software has a unique ability to identify Personal Data used by the ERP and CRM systems on which many businesses depend.  ASG’s Data Intelligence complements this by tracing Personal Data lineage, which is the key foundation to the Data Governance needed for GDPR compliance. Together the two solutions can reduce the risk of the large penalties that can result from non-compliance”.

Silwood Extends Application Metadata Intelligence Capabilities With Launch of Safyr® for Microsoft Dynamics AX

Silwood Technology Ltd today announces the release of Safyr® 6.4, the latest version of the world’s most advanced Application Metadata Intelligence solution. Safyr 6.4 includes a number of major enhancements including the ability to allow users to extract and analyse metadata from Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012.

Microsoft’s presence in the ERP and CRM packaged application space is growing quickly and Silwood have moved to address the challenge many organisations face when trying to access, understand and exploit the underlying data model of Dynamics AX.

As with virtually all large complex enterprise systems, there is no built in easy intuitive way of finding and comprehending the metadata underpinning Microsoft Dynamics AX. For organisations who are trying to incorporate Dynamics AX data in Data Warehouse, Big Data, Master Data Management, Data Integration, Enteprise Metadata Management and Data Governance projects the problems associated with locating the right data tables often results in delays, overspend and poor quality.

With the release of Safyr 6.4, Silwood has advanced the capabilities of the product by introducing an additional module which provides support for extracting metadata from Microsoft Dynamics AX. This reflects that application’s growing importance as a critical system of record for many organisations. Amongst other general enhancements to Safyr, Silwood have made significant improvements to the ‘Compare’ functions to make it easier to locate differences between the metadata in two instances of the same package.

Roland Bullivant, Sales and Marketing Director of Silwood Technology commented: “We are delighted to be announcing this new version of Safyr, the world’s leading software product for Application Metadata Intelligence. We have been seeing a steady increase in the number of customers who are seeking to access and understand the metadata in their Microsoft Dynamics AX systems in order to support information and data led projects. Safyr 6.4 is a response to that demand and another major step in our vision to deliver a centre of excellence for metadata discovery, scoping and delivery across enterprise packages.”

Safyr gives control of how and when to access and use application metadata to those who need it most – the data architects and analysts who are charged with delivering information and data management projects of all kinds. It reduces the cost and time required for source data analysis, data preparation and scoping thereby enabling organisations to be more agile, deliver digital transformation projects faster and with more confidence in the accuracy of the data.
